New state-of-the-art accommodation for York St John

Published: 09 May 2012

Planners have granted the go-ahead for developers to begin work on York St John University’s latest student accommodation in the city.

The £12 million development will provide state-of-the-art accommodation for 258 students within a 10 minute walk from the University’s main campus on Lord Mayor’s Walk. Work will begin at the site on Carmelite Street in July, ready for students to take up residence in September 2013.

York-based S Harrison Developments Ltd are managing the project and have already successfully completed two student accommodation developments – Gray’s Wharf and Percy’s Lane – off Walmgate. These have been heralded a great success with students integrating well into the local community and providing an economic boost for local traders. Like the halls in Walmgate, the proposed new accommodation on Carmelite Street will be car-free with students living within easy walking distance of all the city’s amenities.

Commenting on the new accommodation, Vice Chancellor Professor David Fleming said:

“This new accommodation will provide fantastic facilities for students a stone’s throw away from the main campus. The new build will mirror the highly prestigious and successful Gray’s Wharf and Percy’s Lane accommodation, with the same outstanding quality and environmental standards being a feature of this new accommodation.”

This announcement follows the exciting news about the recent acquisition of the sports park and Joseph Rowntree theatre from Nestle, strengthening the University’s commitment to ensuring an exceptional student experience.
